Fort Myers area fishing report

Published March 3rd, 2023 by Big One Charters, LLC

Week ending March 3, 2024

The weather this winter has just been weird. We’re seeing the normal cold fronts, but also an unusual number of raining days, wind, and cloud cover lasting all day.

We’ve had some great fishing days, in spite of the unusual weather. We’ve been able to find redfish, snook, mangrove snapper and Sheepshead in the mornings by fishing creeks and backwaters where the water is a few degrees warmer. As the day (and water) warms up, we move out to the flats where we’re finding trout, jacks, Ladyfish and other fun species. Threadfin, white bait and pinfish have been readily available, but the best bite has been on live shrimp.

Triple Tail are on the nearshore crab buoys, and Cobia are starting to show up on the reefs and wrecks. King and Spanish Mackerel should also be prowling around near shore structure, but we haven't targeted them recently due to wind and choppy seas. If you want to hook up with a big, fast, hard fighting fish, Barracuda are almost a sure thing trolling tubes around the local reefs.
